US 3D technology firm Matterport is building the Habitat-Matterport 3D Research Dataset (HM3D), a growing database of digital twins of indoor spaces boasting impressive efficiency and facility management costs of up to 50 percent.
The leading spatial data company is expanding its capture service to 14 US cities. Joining Matterport’s trusted network are the states of Texas, Illinois, Washington, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, and Idaho, so local enterprises can order and receive digital twins seamlessly.
Matterport’s expansion is important as the firm foresees sustained growth for HM3D, which follows similar expansions in June to bring capture services to 12 cities, including California and New York.
Matterport offers capture services on-demand, allowing individuals, small businesses and large enterprises to book appointments with capture technicians with Pro2 cameras to digitise interiors.
Brendan Dowdle, GM of Matterport Capture Services said any business could benefit from Matterport’s platform, adding:
“Customers in a variety of industries have come to rely on the value of 3D digital twins” whether supporting the design, building, selling or leasing of a space; managing a property remotely; generating critical data to support a renovation, and more”
Facebook and Matterport Partnership
The developments come after Facebook announced its artificial intelligence (AI) division had teamed up with Matterport to “help change the way we work and live,” and had additionally released its consumer-grade Pro2 cameras and API software development kits for home use.
The partnership created HM3D as a foundation for research into AI and augmented reality (AR) assistances.
The digital twin library supplies data to train embodied AI and robotics to navigate and understand real-life 3D spaces to solve problems in a virtual space. A joint announcement video from Matterport and Facebook unveiled AR visualisations assisting with daily tasks. Facebook may also integrate HM3D into Project Aria, a pair of AR smartglasses rumoured for release later this year.
