Today, Scentrealm Tech proudly announced the completion of its long-term research and development (R&D) project to establish a remote smell application for enterprise end-users.

The firm’s Telescent solution provides remote-scent experiences with a unique system that introduces extended reality (XR) services to olfactory remote sensory interaction.

The system enables Scentrealm to distribute remote smells to a user in an immersive environment to simulate a place or subject better.

Scentrealm debuted Telescent at the Hangzhou Yunxi Conference, which took place between November 3 – 5, 2022, held in Yunqi Town, Hangzhou.

At the event, Scentrealm introduced its remote odour device, which aligns with the firm’s product portfolio of similar devices for various end-users.

Scentrealm first started production of its latest device in 2015. By 2021, Chinese technology secured roughly 130 patents for its Telescent device and a digital library of around 3,000 essential smells.

Moreover, Scentrealm won awards in 2016 and 2017 for enterprise innovation. The recognition and subsequent innovation mark Scentrealm’s dedication to designing unique enterprise tools.

How can Telescent work?

Telescent uses unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to transmit real-time scent data from a location to a user. The solution collects geographical coordinates to decipher the location’s smell and send it to the Telescent cloud.

Telescent broadcasts its location-based smell simulations to users. According to the firm, its remote-scent solution suit various consumer and enterprise use cases, covering verticals like medicine, tourism, virtual exhibition, eCommerce, video games, and advertising.

For example, Telescenet could enhance an immersive virtual reality (VR) training procedure by introducing realistic smells and fully immersing a trainee in a digital learning scenario.

In a statement, Jianwei Huang, the Founder and CEO of Scentrealm, added,

“In the research section, students can experience the scent of various wild plants in the classroom, without leaving the classroom. Besides teaching and research, it will be applied to a variety of scenes in the future”

In addition to its new Telescent solution, Scentrealm offers a selection of remote-smell accessories for its range of end-users. Streamrealm’s products, such as its Smell Tourism and Advertising solutions, combine audiovisual playback with remote smell technology to provide a uniquely immersive experience.

Additionally, some of the firm’s devices come packed with integrated 5G hardware enabling Scentrealm to deploy its immersive solution in many different real-world locations. Huang also noted that Telescent does not limit its remote-smell abilities based on distance.

XR Today: How can Scentrealm’s solution boost an immersive experience?

Jianwei Huang: Immersive experience, in fact, is the full mobilization of human and external interactive senses.

In fact, all our feelings come from this trigger and feedback. Vision is the trigger, and feedback is the external light. Hearing is the trigger, and feedback is the sound wave.

Touch, smell, and taste are actually different triggers and feedback. Each additional trigger and feedback will make the experience more three-dimensional and vivid.

Immersion [seamlessly blends] the virtual world and the real world. The simplest example is that when you smell gunpowder while watching a movie, you will feel that the person is shooting around.

XR Today: Why should potential clients consider when employing remote scent applications?

Jianwei Huang: The remote application of smell is not necessary. It solves the problem of information transmission efficiency just like the telegraph and telephone.

Things that had to be smelled in person can now be transmitted via the Internet. Similar to eCommerce shopping, social interaction, picture sharing, and remote smell transmission, there will be huge application scenarios.

XR Today: When can consumers and clients start experiencing Scentrealm’s remote smell-enhanced experiences?

Jianwei Huang: Consumers can actually experience it now, but it is limited by the size and cost of the device.

Only large professional equipment can provide a relatively rich and complete scent. However, if customers use our MINI digital scent player, it can contain six kinds of scents and can also do some basic common scent experiences and interactions.

Scentrealm’s website includes more information on its product portfolio and digital library of remote scents.
