Virtual Medical Coaching (VMC) is an immersive training technology developer designing bespoke solutions to enhance the safety of conventional front-line learning environments.

The medical edtech company leverages augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR) solutions to provide varied and realistic training scenarios. The Christchurch, Canterbury-based firm powers its AR/VR solutions by utilizing immersive technology like remote guidance, big data, and artificial intelligence (AI).

VMC currently provides immersive training solutions for radiography, radiation & safety dosimetry, and childbirth scenarios. Additionally, the firm has a midwife training solution in beta. The firm is also working on upcoming computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and mammography immersive training services.

VMC uses VR headsets from firms like HTC VIVE to provide learners with immersive education environments such as surgery rooms. Additionally, VMC environments support multiple remote users meaning dispersed learners can access training exercises as a group of connected students and teachers.

Partnering with Siemens Healthineers

VMC is an active partner with Siemens Healthineers, a global medical technology vendor expanding its product portfolio to cover extended reality (XR) hardware.

The firm is aiding healthcare institutions with securing next-generation medical technology, including AR, VR, and AI solutions. VMC is working with Siemens Healthineers to distribute its VR Dosimetry and VR-Enabled X-ray Training solutions globally.

VMC designed its VR Dosimetry solution for clinical staff working in environments with an increased risk of radiation exposure, such as X-ray rooms. VMC’s interactive radiation safety training simulation uses digital twins of real-world products sold by Siemens Healthineers.

The service includes various virtual training scenarios, VR visualizations of radiation exposure, user positioning for radiation protection simulation, and real-time metrics on individual radiation absorption.

According to Siemens Healthineers, VR Dosimetry increases staff learning efficiency and scales knowledge of radiation safety across a workplace.

In a blog post, James Hayes, the Founder and Managing Director at VMC expressed the importance of safe radiation training and the increasing importance of radiation safety officers (RSO). Hayes explained that RSO representation is crucial to protect healthcare workers from harmful radiation exposure.

Additionally, he added that radiation training is integral and that RSO workers need efficient, safe, and reliable laboratory working environments to streamline the learning process.

VR-Enabled X-ray Training

Siemens Healthineers is also assisting in distributing VR-Enabled X-Ray Training from VMC. The on-demand immersive learning service supplies high-efficiency immersive X-ray simulation training.

The service contains 84 million VR-training scenarios based on 20 body segments; the x-ray training solution also allows students to interact with digital patients and perform repeatable routines.
