The Cannes Film Festival is entering the digital space with its Cannes XR Virtual, a three-day event set to take place June 24-26 online via the Museum of Other Realities (MOR).

The Cannes XR Virtual programme is set up in part by the Marché du Film, which has run alongside Cannes since 1959.

Marché du Film is a marketplace of ideas and projects seeking to raise the bar for film professionals, and will extend its showcase to include XR projects this year.

Marché du Film and Festival de Cannes are working together, with key partners, to present a showcase of 55 XR projects.

Loren Hammonds, Senior Programmer, Film & Immersive for Tribeca Film Festival said:

“This year’s program was set to feature some of the most innovative experiences to date […] We are excited to present a selection of those projects virtually, tackling adaptation and innovation in another context”

Jérôme Paillard, Executive director of the Marché du Film said:

“The Marché du Film is more than determined to highlight the XR industry and to foster links between artists and potential investors to support creation in all its richness and diversity.

MOR on the Cannes XR Event

The MOR is metaverse allowing groups to share their virtual reality (VR) art and will facilitate the Cannes XR event with a full gallery.

MOR work in collaboration with Kaléidoscope, a virtual reality (VR) production studio specialising in VR events by providing a smooth and accessible user experience.

Users can download the MOR application and, with the use of a VR headset, explore the galley’s exhibitions.

The American Tribeca Film Festival are providing several international and online project premieres to the event with a ‘Virtual Arcade’.

Sponsored by AT&T, the Virtual Arcade will showcase twelve VR and mixed reality (MR) exhibits along with two creative panel discussions for the event.

Beijing-based cinematic VR firm VeeR VR will also provide several XR projects and selection of 360 degree immersive cinematic experiences.

The Cannes XR Development Showcase will curate 22 projects, offering a global platform for 23 ongoing projects seeking investors.

The 55 finalists will compete for two awards—the VeeR Future Award and the Positron Visionary Award—which judges will hand out on June 29 at the MOR gallery.
